The Rockport Umbwe boot is now officially back with a big burley bang for the next generation of performance footwear fanatics & now arrives at MIRAIL.
If you were knocking about in the late 90s & early noughties in the North of England you’ll remember them massive boots called Rockports. Personally I was more of a wallabee man, but I did still appreciate the craftsmanship. Typically worn with Berghaus jackets, Levi’s jeans & stripey Henri Lloyd stuff, the Rockport Umbwe boot was just about as burley as it got for walking about the streets of Burnley, Blackburn or Bradford. It wasn’t uncommon to walk onto the many underground Italian house dancefloors of the North West & surrounding areas to find pilled up party boys banging it out in a pair of Rockports to the euphoric sounds of John G & MC Wizard.
Commonly referred to as twock-ports, as they were generally worn by twockers a Northern slang for car thieves (TWOC – taking without consent), the Rockport’s subcultural connection was however a lot more than nicking banged out Nova’s from a Kwik Save car park in Stockport. It was also the 90s football casuals who had a penchant for big jackets & boots. Obviously Rockport as a brand choice was a no brainer. Getting booted in the ribs with a pair of Rockports not only left bruises but an overall appreciation for the craftsmanship in a weird sort of Tyler Durden way.
